Where to Stay in Bend, Oregon
Before I just into what types of accommodations there are, let’s talk about where Bend is in Oregon and give you a sense of space so you can choose the best area to stay.
Where is Bend, Oregon?
Bend is located in Central Oregon about 3.5 hours east of Portland and 6.5 hours southeast of Seattle. The City of Bend put together this neighborhood map to give a sense of how it’s divided. Old Bend toward the middle is where you’ll find the downtown area. But Bend is often called a small town because there are only ~100,000 residents. So anywhere you stay in the surrounding areas will get you to downtown in around 15 minutes.

What is Bend, Oregon known for?
Bend is located in the high desert and has a lot of volcanic remnants from the Cascade Mountain Range. It experiences four seasons with a lot of sunny days, a dry climate, and cool nights. Given its varied and vast terrain, Bend is an adventure lover’s playground, with a ton of outdoor recreation options to choose from. But it also has a hip factor, meaning there are plenty of fun activities not far from the city center.
Here are the types of activities you’ll likely find yourself doing when you visit Bend.
Skiing & snowboarding

Bend is only about 30 minutes from Mount Bachelor, one of the United States’ world-class ski resorts that gives the ski resorts in Washington a run for their money. My family and I carve out at least one day here for downhill and Nordic skiing when we visit. But there are a lot of skiing options in Bend, ranging from other downhill ski resorts to cross-country skiing trails for all skill levels.
Biking

Bend is a huge biking city, with a bunch of paved paths and bike lanes meandering around the city. That biking culture extends into the adventure sport category, with a ton of mountain biking trails around the city and up toward the Mt. Bachelor area.
Hiking & climbing
There are also a ton of hiking trails in Bend, plus plenty of options for rock climbing. You’ll find popular trails near the city like Pilote Butte and further afield in the Deschutes National Forest. There are also a bunch of nearby state parks like the famous Smith Rock State Park ~30 minutes north of the city. No matter your skill level, there’s a hike for everyone.

Caves
One of my favorite things about Bend is the fact that there are a bunch of caves ready for you to explore. They’re eerie, but beautiful geological marvels great for all skill levels. Some of my favorites include Boyd Cave and Redmond Cave. Just remember to bring a headlamp or flashlight! Your phone will work in a pinch, but more light is better.

River tubing
Come summer, Bend is a hot spot for river tubing, paddling, and rafting. You can launch right from downtown Bend at spots like Whitewater Park and Farewell Bend Park after renting tubes from spots like Sun Country Tours. Or you can go on a white-water rafting adventure with a guide further afield.
Breweries
If you love craft beers, you’ll be happy to know there’s a big brewery scene in Bend. Many are dog and kid friendly, plus most host fun trivia and bingo nights throughout the week.

Restaurants
I love the food scene in Bend so much that I have a whole article on the best Bend restaurants. You’ll find everything throughout the city of Bend, whether you’re craving casual spots for kids, fine dining, or something in between. And the best part? There are a ton of food cart pods like in PDX!

Arts & shopping
Bend has a cute art scene and a bunch of adorable local shops. I love spending a few hours combing the streets downtown, followed by shopping in the Old Mill District. While the latter has a lot of High Street shops, there are also locally-owned spots tucked in between. Plus it’s right along the river so you can take a nature break anytime.

The last Blockbuster
If you’re a 90s nostalgia baby, you’ll be happy to know that the last remaining Blockbuster in the world is randomly located in Bend. There’s a mini memorabilia museum inside, plus it offers rentals just like the olden days. Heck, it even smells exactly the same inside!

Where are the best places to stay in Bend, Oregon?
Alright, now that you have a sense of where Bend is located and what there is to do, let me share the best vacation rentals and hotels in Bend! I’ll share where each are located and what type of group size and activities they’re best for.

McMenamins Old St. Francis School
link to book | area: downtown (get directions) | cost: starts at ~$180/nt | bedrooms: 0-5 | bathrooms: 1-2 | pet friendly | soaking pool

Old School St. Francis School is one of my favorite places in Bend, whether it be to stay or just to visit. It’s conveniently located within walking distance of all the downtown shops and restaurants. Plus it has a ton of do right on the property itself thanks to amenities and a seemingly-endless calendar of events.
McMenamins is known for restoring historic properties around the Pacific Northwest and they did an awesome job at this property. It was once a 1936 Catholic schoolhouse, but now it’s a stunning hotel with 60 classrooms-turned-hotel rooms, a pub, brewery, movie theater, courtyard patio, and plenty of places to get lost. Heck there’s even a speakeasy bar hidden in its walls if you can find it!

The speakeasy is pretty darn cool, but probably the coolest part of Old St. Francis School is the breathtaking bathhouse. Guests can access the pool anytime. But even non-guests can make a reservation to soak among the breathtaking turquoise and gold mosaics.
Riverhouse Lodge
link to book | area: Boyd Acres (get directions) | cost: starts at ~$340/nt | bedrooms: 0-1 | bathrooms: 1 | pet friendly | pool & hot tub

As you may have guessed from the name, Riverhouse Lodge sits right on the Deschutes River a short drive from downtown. You can choose rooms that sit alongside the bank, some with fire pits perfect for taking in the ambiance. Or choose from one of their other room styles, such as bunk rooms for groups and rooms that have a separate bedroom with some privacy.
For being one of the more modestly-priced hotels in Bend, Riverhouse Lodge has a bunch of amenities. For example, there are two heated pools, a seasonal outdoor one and one that’s indoors. There’s also a year-round hot tub, steam room, and barrel sauna perfect for lounging after a day hiking or skiing. If you haven’t had enough movement, you can rent bikes or use Riverhouse’s 24-hour fitness center.
Brasada Ranch

While it’s 30 minutes northeast of Bend, Brasada Ranch is a luxury, yet family-friendly ranch that’s worth a trip to central Oregon alone because it’s one of the best resorts in the PNW. It sits on 1,800 acres of land, 900 of which is totally protected and ready for you to explore.
The property boasts farm-to-table restaurants, a spa, golf course, athletic center, and pools. You’ll never be bored with the endless activities, whether it’s archery, horseback riding, biking, or video games in the arcade. The property is so big that you can even rent a golf cart-like vehicle to get around!
Room wise you can rent rooms in the lodge or one of many cabins around the property. They come in 1-4 bedroom sizes. And you can search for the ones that have private hot tubs and allow dogs.
The Hastings House
link to book | area: Old bend (get directions) | cost: starts at ~$450/nt | bedrooms: 3 | bathrooms: 2 | dog friendly | hot tub

If you love spaces as beautiful as they are functional, you’ll love The Hastings House. This vacation rental has a modern-meets-western aesthetic and luxury amenities. Guests are pampered with heated bathroom floors, Aesop soap products, a chef’s kitchen, fast WiFi, Netflix, and a large hot tub.
The fully-fenced backyard also has corn hole, a smoker and grill, plus cruiser bikes to take around town. You may not need them though, as downtown Bend, Crux Fermentation Project, Old Mill District, and the Deschutes River are all within walking distance of the house!
Tumalo Lake Lodge
link to book | area: Tumalo Falls (get directions) | cost: starts at ~$1,375/nt | bedrooms: 8 | bathrooms: 9.5 | hot tub

Before you say, “Adria, are you crazy?! Over $1,000 a night?” Listen, this isn’t for just you and your family. Tumalo Lake Lodge is a retreat nestled in the wood that’s best for groups of 16-20 people. If you’re not rolling that deep, skip this spot or inquire about one of their smaller cabins. But if you’re celebrating a bachelorette party, family reunion, or getaway with a big friend group, this spot is it.
Tumalo Lake Lodge sits on 640 private acres 12 miles from downtown Bend, 45 minutes to Mt. Bachelor, and a short 4 miles to the famous Tumalo Falls. The property gives you access to a 2-mile hike around the lake, complimentary kayaks, canoes, and SUPs, and lawn games like corn hole and horseshoes. Since you’re nestled in the forest, you’re also near some great hiking, mountain biking, and fishing opportunities (no license required).
The home itself is a complete stunner. There are large windows and cozy knotty wood details throughout. Most of the rooms have ensuite bathrooms and all have luxury linens. You can bask in the forest on the wrap-around deck, around the fire pit, or from the private hot tub. If you have up to 20 people and rent out the basement apartment, you’ll also get access to a yoga and ping pong room! Still not luxurious enough? Catering, yoga instruction, and massage therapist resources are available with advance planning.

They have a year-round salt water pool and hot tub that attracts both hotel guests and visitors alike. When people aren’t taking a dip in the pool, they’re either lounging on the chaises, chatting around the fire pit, or enjoying live music from the stage.
Typically hotels aren’t great for bigger groups because it requires everyone to get a separate room and use public spaces for hang out time. But Campfire Motel has rooms with bunks and separate areas that you can reserve for your own party.

Tetherow Resort
link to book | area: Tetherow (get directions) | cost: starts at ~$400/nt | bedrooms: 0-5 | bathrooms: 1-4 | pet friendly | pool & hot tub

Just at the start of the road you’d take from Bend to Mt. Bachelor is the ritzy resort community, Tetherow Resort. Often my family will detour on the ride home from skiing to gawk at the beautiful houses that dot the kid-safe streets. 40 of those houses are vacation rentals, but Tetherow is also home to various residential communities within its 700-acre property too.
Besides vacation rentals, the resort has a 50-room boutique hotel, pool, three restaurants, event pavilion, 18-hole golf course, and golf academy. There’s also a fitness facility that offers classes. Or if you more the musical type you can rent guitars for free!
