Casual Weekend Style

a comfortable dress shirt, free-form blazer, skinny jeans, and comfy flats make for a great weekend uniform. - via The Emerald Palate

Do you ever catch yourself wearing the same thing all the time?

That’s me pretty much daily. I’ve paired down my wardrobe so that I can easily grab and mix up a few key pieces. One of my go-to casual weekend styles includes fitted sweats, a slouchy t-shirt, my pleather bomber, red Converse-like sneakers, and sometimes a beanie and/or scarf if the whether permits. However, that’s not always appropriate for every occasion you might find yourself in over the weekend.

So I had to come up with another weekend uniform option. This look is one that I rely on again and again for a still casual, but can-go-to-pretty-much-any-type-of-activity outfit for the weekend. Brunch? You got it. Shopping? Definitely. Straight to happy hour drinks? Oh yeah.

Read on to find out what I’m wearing and to learn which items you can use in your own closet to create your own casual weekend style.

Your Casual Weekend Style Uniform

So, how do you put together a casual weekend style uniform that you can wear to any type of activity? The key is balance. You should:

  • Wear shoes that aren’t sneakers that you can walk in and easily get on/off.
  • Balance proportions. If you go for a larger, slouchy top, pair it with fitted bottoms. If you go for loose bottoms, stick with a fitted top.
  • Make sure you can move around in what you’re wearing.
  • Pay attention to materials and mix it up. For example, silk can easily add a touch of elegance to an otherwise all-cotton ensemble.
  • Rethink classics. For example, a blazer doesn’t need to be structured. A sweatshirt can be tailored.
  • Accessorize to take your look out of just “basics” territory.

You can see how I followed these principles in my ensemble:

  • Comfortable shoes: I can wear these flats for days. The pointed toe and pattern make them dressier, yet they’re still canvas.
  • Balanced proportions: I went with a slouchy top, so skinny jeans were a must.
  • Mobility: Those said skinny jeans are jeggings, muahaha!
  • Material mashup: I went with a silk top and pearls to add some elegance.
  • Rethought classics: My blazer is flow-y and made of linen. My jeans are jeggings. My slouchy top is silk. Pretty much everything I’m wearing is a remastered classic.
  • Accessories: I added a delicate gold necklace and bracelet to fancy up a uniform made of mostly basics. My quilted purse also adds some fancy.

It’s likely you have the makings of a casual weekend style right in your closet. Try mixing and matching these items:

  • Leather/faux leather leggings, or leggings with a bit of sheen
  • Ballet flats
  • Flat or low-heeled booties
  • Oversized dress tops
  • Chinos
  • Fitted cardigans or sweatshirts
  • A tailored crew sweatshirt
  • Button-up shirts in cotton or silk
  • Cardigans
  • Statement necklaces

Hopefully this gives you some ideas! What other items can you think of? What’s your weekend uniform? Share in the comments!

What I’m wearing: J.Crew red dress shirt (similar), J.Jill white linen blazer (similar), Gap skinny jegging jeans, Abound Aztec tribal flats, Tiffany & Co. pearl bracelet, thrifted quilted cross-body bag, and a gold bar pendant necklace I purchased from a small boutique in San Diego (similar).
